They are generally need-based. Grants may be made on the federal and\/or state level, and usually have requirements based on enrollment and residence. Recipients must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Loans are disbursed in two equal installments per semester. The government pays the interest due on the loan while the student is enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours), during the 6 month grace period after dropping below half-time enrollment, and during deferment periods. No payment on principal is required until the student drops below half-time enrollment and has completed the 6 month grace period; however, interest begins accruing from the date of disbursement. Students can avoid capitalization of the interest by making interest payments while in school. the generous support of the Golden Leaf Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Eligible students must:<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be 18 years old or older.<\/li>\n<li>Be a resident of North Carolina for the past year.<\/li>\n<li>Have your high school diploma or equivalency.<\/li>\n<li>Reside in a qualifying Golden LEAF rural county such as Stokes County.<\/li>\n<li>Be unemployed or not make too much income. For example, if you work and have no dependents, you have to make under $30,120 per year.
